Designs are in-progress for a new facility for The Play School, a family-owned and -operated child care center that serves Indianapolis area families. This 15,000-sq. ft. facility designed by Curran will be The Play School’s fourth location.
“We have really enjoyed working with Shawn Curran on our new building,” said Katie Guerra, Finance Director for The Play School. “We decided to use Curran for our next building design because we felt he would offer us a perfect balance of function and design. We have a very practical approach when designing our child care space, and Shawn listened to our needs and met all our goals in the building layout.”
According to Guerra, a day care like theirs needs spaces that are designed to be “used and abused” from 6:30 am to 6:00 pm by more than one hundred children each day. In addition, each room must meet the state’s requirements for the amount of square footage per child. There are many more details dictated by Indiana child care licenses, all the way down to the specific distance a changing table must be to the nearest hand washing sink.
“Shawn helped us think of little things to make the teacher’s day run smoothly, such as storage rooms for supplies and plug-ins placed conveniently for music players and bottle warmers. When we took the design plans to the builders, they commented on how smartly the HVAC system was designed into the building for efficiency and easy access. Working with Shawn on the design was a great experience, and then taking his plans to the builder’s meetings gave us additional confidence that he had thought of everything.”
The new facility is planned to open later this fall.
