Meet Jess! With more than two decades of experience in education, Jess brings a wealth of patience, warmth, and organization to the Curran Architecture team.
How did you end up at Curran?
After graduating from Butler University with my teaching degree, I spent over 20 years teaching at an elementary school. I was seeking a change from the education world and actually found this role through my boyfriend, Rob, who also works at Curran. I know what you are thinking… education to architecture – what? There are more transferable skills than you might think. You would be surprised how similar adults are to six year olds – it’s just a bit less hectic! I have always thought of myself as a nurturer, so starting a role where I can help find solutions and lift others up to reach the end goal suits my strengths.
What attracted you to Curran Architecture?
I definitely love the authentic culture here at Curran. I thrive in a collaborative environment and I really value the flexibility and the people – understanding that things happen in life and supporting the whole person is a non-negotiable. I don’t just show up as an employee, I bring my entire self to work everyday and it is important to me that the company I work for feels the same (which Curran does.)
What skills are you excited to bring to the team?
I think my strengths lie in my ability to analyze data and implement what I learned. I have a knack for making sure everything is in the right place, literally and figuratively, and the role I am coming into provides an opportunity for me to flourish. I am passionate about making sure people have what they need to thrive. That being said, I am eager to help create a safe and productive office environment for the team that allows each employee to show up as their best self day in and day out.
Where are you excited to grow?
I am just excited for new experiences! Coming from a teaching role, there are a lot of transferable skills, but there is also a lot I can learn about the industry itself. Ultimately, I am eager to bring my nurturing side to the team to lend a hand and be the dependable assist they might need to find success.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy all things murder mystery. I indulge in documentaries, books and podcasts. Something about the thrill keeps me coming back for more! I also enjoy making modern quilts, and frequently travel to Florida to visit Disney World.
What is something a stranger would be surprised to learn about you?
I am terrified of praying mantis’, I did a lot of community theater and I have a massive Harry Potter collection that I have combined with my boyfriend, Rob.
If you could teleport anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?
If I could teleport anywhere in the world, I’d choose a quiet cabin along the river – emphasis on quiet. Did I mention I taught grade school for more than 20 years?! I definitely enjoy the heads down work at Curran, and the quiet it provides. Yet, nothing compares to the serene flow of a river on a sunny day in nature.
