The 8,000 SF concrete block utilitarian building housing the Humane Society of Hamilton County (HSHC) was more than 30 years old and too small to provide animals with a decent quality of life. That changed in April 2021, when the HSHC found a forever home in Fishers, Ind. At about 41,000 square feet, the new facility is five times larger than the previous one and includes a spacious welcome area, a kitchen, a medical grade ventilation system, classroom space, a canine “romping room,” sunlight-filled “catios,” and a wellness center and surgical suite. The new layout and expanded kennel space reduces the stress on animals so they can be themselves and, in turn, be adopted more quickly.
